Local-area author defies death and tells the story in his memoir: Three Hours to Live

By Lindsay Rizzo August 9, 2018

He woke up coughing up blood in his parents' house in the middle of the night... Luckily, he wasn't quiet about it; his parents woke up, and his father took him to the ER immediately. Within ten minutes of walking himself into Grossmont Hospital, Jonathan Rizzo was in and out of consciousness as he heard the doctor tell his father: "If this were my son, I'd be scared sh*tless - he has about three hours to live."

From there, medical staff would spend the next few days desperately trying to figure out what was wrong with this healthy, youthful man before he either died or became completely brain-dead; one of the two seemed completely inevitable. Meanwhile, Rizzo was lying lifeless in a medical-induced coma. His own brother, a recent medical school graduate and surgeon, flew out to say final goodbyes, and assessed that his little brother's situation appeared fatal even to him.

From the first page of the first chapter, "Gasping," we are pulled into the harrowing situation of this healthy twenty-four-year old man who is stricken with the reality that his life is being taken from him with only hours' notice. Move from terror to acceptance, then to an unexpected spiritual journey through Heaven and Hell.

Nothing but the reality of losing life itself can truly demonstrate its value. Rizzo has made it his life's purpose to share what he experienced in the hours and weeks following the news of his would-be untimely death as a young man. He will suck you into a whirlwind and release you back into reality encouraged and refreshed.

The feedback we've received from hundreds of readers already has been so encouraging and positive. He's been working on this project since 2016, and I couldn't be more proud of this accomplishment.
