Being Pro-Active in Preventing Child Abduction

By Lindsay Rizzo March 21, 2019

I realize this week's topic can be considered a bit "dark," but with all the social media posts and news articles of late about BOLD local attempts at child abduction, I'm not shying away. I also recently finished the documentary surrounding the case of missing little Madeleine McCann on Netflix. Fired up! If you're the parent of a son, I'm talking to you too... I was recently made aware of a podcast wherein the speaker noted that young boys are at higher risk of child abduction because they simply aren't watched as closely as girls, due to the consensus that girls would be the obvious target. (Did you follow that? Me neither. Moving on...)

One thing we've done as a family is gathered ID Kits from the National Child Identification Program for each of our girls. Each kit includes a fingerprint card and DNA collection swab which you keep in your possession - no need to enter your child's DNA or fingerprints into any databases. You hang onto the kit and pull it out only in the event of a missing family member.

These kits are for use at the age of 4 and up, but it's never too early to order one to have on hand, and administer when your kiddos are old enough.

I also want to mention a Human Trafficking Awareness Seminar happening May 31-June 1 in Point Loma. Friday night's event is geared toward youth ages 12 and up; an effort to educate youth about this topic. Saturday morning will bring it all full-circle. It's only $20 to attend, which goes to the organizations putting on this event. Contact info and event details are in the links I supplied here.

Nothing wrong with being pro-active, and seeking wisdom about how to talk to our kids about this without scaring the daylights out of them. We are all in this together!

Til next week, like/follow Mac Kid Santee on Facebook for some laughs and, as always, last minute local deals and freebies I'll throw your way!
